Occasionally he returned to the U.S., pursuing graduate work at the University of Chicago (A.M., Chinese Buddhism, 1923), Hartford Seminary (Ph.D., 1930), and the San Francisco Seminary (S.T.M., 1931).
He then spent a year as a research fellow at New College, Edinburgh, and Mansfield College, Oxford, and then began missionary work in China at Hangchow Christian College. Following graduation he attended the San Francisco Theological Seminary and was ordained in 1914. He was a graduate of Hamilton College, class of 1911.
